The American Teledentistry Association received a Consumer Alert issued by the American Association of Orthodontists. Consumers were advised to ask 14 specific questions when considering treatment by what the AAO termed direct-to-consumer orthodontic companies. Five companies were mentioned by name in the alert.
The ATDA reached out to the five companies who offer doctor-directed at home clear aligner orthodontic treatment. Four of the five companies responded to the AAO questions and their answers can be found below.
The American Association of Orthodontists has also filed several dozen complaints with state boards of dentistry against SmileDirectClub, the industry leader in the teleorthodontic space. The ATDA is unaware of any state dental board that has taken any action against SDC. The Arizona Dental Board recently reviewed the complaint and voted to take no action. Audio from the April board meeting is posted on their site and a short clip of the time spent discussing SmileDirectClub is below.
